The 5 Things I Always Buy

The 5 Things I Always Buy

5 things I always buySo you clicked on this because you want to know my deepest, darkest secrets…or maybe you just want to know what I buy at the grocery store.

Last week I made a comment on Facebook about curating a job where I grocery shop for people. I’m not talking Instacart online ordering and pick up though. I’d call the shots, pack your pantry, stock your fridge…that’s right, you’d get whatever I give you and you’d like it. I couldn’t believe how many people were alllll about this. I don’t understand the intense loathing that so many people feel towards the grocery store. I mean, I LOVE the grocery store. If I had an afternoon free to myself to do whatever I wanted it would probably involve working out, coffee, and strolling the aisles of the grocery store. You think I’m kidding? just ask my husband. For my birthday I asked him if I could go on an unsupervised trip to Whole Foods. I had to stop shopping at Whole Foods on the reg because #wholepaycheck (don’t tell him but sometimes I take out cash and sneak in there…shhhh). As you can see my love for the grocery store runs deep.

Let’s say theoretically speaking, after adding up how much I spent at the grocery store in a month, for 2 people, it came out to some astronomical amount like 1,000 dollars…theoretically of course, purely theoretical. Enter grocery store budget. So what are my essentials, my must haves and why? *spoiler alert* Ice cream is not on this list but I do feel strongly about its place in my cart.

1. Avocados

  • Why I buy it: It’s a great source of healthy fats. Avocados contain fiber and potassium, as well as being a great source of vitamin E.
  • How to use it: There are so many options! I love making a cream sauce to be used on a variety of dishes, mashed on avocado toast, sliced on sandwiches and tacos. You can also sneak it into baked goods without detecting and taste and adding a creamy consistency, don’t tell the kiddos!

2. Spinach

  • Why I buy it: It’s a nutritional powerhouse, rich in vitamins and minerals. Another great source of fiber, and antioxidants spinach can help with a multitude of things from digestion to clear skin.
  • How to use it: Saute spinach and use it in just about anything! I love to toss some in with my eggs in the morning, it cooks in quite a bit so grab a few handfuls. Toss it in protein shakes for an undetectable taste and a vibrant green color

3.Pumpkin

  • Why I buy it: Because I’m basic. Just kidding. I actually buy it because I use it every night for my pumpkin pancake in a bowl. If you stalk me hard enough you can probably find the recipe somewhere, or you can just scroll to the bottom
  • How to use it: I love to use pumpkin in baking, it gives a moist consistency and can often substitute for things like butter and oil. I’ve also seen it used in numerous chili and soup recipes!

4.Egg Whites

  • Why I buy it: One of the fastest and easiest sources of protein to have on hand. Eggs are also the most bio available source of whole food you can consume, meaning the body can easily and rapidly metabolize the amino acids for use.
  • How to use it: The possibilities are endless here, omelettes, egg white bites, scrambles, frittatas, you can even add to things like homemade meatballs and burgers.

5. Onion, Garlic and Cilantro

  • Why I buy it: I know I cheated a bit here because there are 3 things listed, but this is my blog and there are no rules here. I used to hate buying cilantro because it would go bad so fast! So I just started chopping it up and adding it to everything, and now I’m obsessed! it makes food taste so fresh. Onion and garlic are two things almost any dish can benefit from (except oatmeal, eww don’t try that) Garlic has amazing health benefits including reducing the prevalence of heart disease and several metabolic diseases.
  • How to use it: Caramelized onions make a great addition to sandwiches, salads, and burgers. Roasted garlic is packed with amazing flavor. My favorite homemade pizza uses roasted garlic and ricotta cheese with caramelized onions, ugh it’s amazing. I used to think cilantro only belonged in my Mexican dishes but, oh girl, no no no. It goes on my eggs, on my tacos, basically everything but my oatmeal.

As promised here’s my delicious pumpkin pancake bowl recipe

  • 60g grams canned pumpkin
  • 20g any pancake mix ( I love Kodiak Cakes or Bobs Red Mill)
  • 15g vanilla protein
  • 70g unsweetened cashew milk (any milk will work)
  1. Mix everything together in a small bowl and microwave for 3 minutes. Let cool and top with whatever your heart desires. That’s it!
